Academics at Kingwood Junior Prep

Discover the Flexibility of Virtual Middle School

Kingwood Junior Prep follows a TEKS-aligned curriculum that meets state standards and prepares students for the challenges of high school. By utilizing K12's Cognia-accredited curriculum, we proudly combine academic excellence with the flexibility of online learning, offering families a high-quality alternative to a traditional middle school education.

A mostly virtual private middle school serving Kingwood-area families, KJP's academic program is both rigorous and flexible. Our academic model gives students the opportunity to learn in ways that cater to their individual needs while keeping them connected to their teachers and peers.

Empowering Students with Asynchronous Learning

Our KJP academic program is fully asynchronous, meaning students complete lessons on their own time while receiving support from certified Stride teachers. With guidance built into every course, students develop independence while still having access to personalized feedback.

The Kingwood Junior Prep Academic Program

KJP delivers an asynchronous, TEKS-aligned curriculum through the K12 Learning Academy.  Texas-certified teachers provide ongoing, personalized feedback through K12's built-in communication tools.

Core Subjects

Students engage in a variety of core subjects, including:

  • Math

  • Science

  • Language Arts

  • Social Studies

  • Art and Music

  • World Languages (Spanish, French, and more)

Each subject is enriched with interactive, online components that keep learning more engaging and connected to real-world applications. Together with our unique electives, these courses create a well-rounded academic experience that prepares students for both high school and life beyond the classroom.

Flexible and Supported Learning

Every student learns differently, which is why flexibility is at the core of our academic program.

Through the Canvas LMS provided by K12, students can:

  • Work at their own pace while still meeting structured deadlines and expectations

  • Access assignments, feedback, and grades in one place

  • Use online tools like Office 365 to complete projects and collaborate

Parents stay involved by monitoring their child's progress, attending KJP meet-ups, and supporting students as learning coaches. This balance of independence and guidance helps our families feel confident that their student is on track and thriving in a virtual middle school setting.

STAAR Test Preparation

As a private school, KJP does not offer STAAR testing, but because our program is aligned with TEKS standards, students naturally build the skills needed for success on high school STAAR assessments. In addition, certified teachers provide targeted practice and support to help students feel confident on test day.

Building the Foundation for High School Success

At KJP, students build the foundation to thrive in advanced high school programs such as AP and CTE courses at Kingwood High School and Kingwood Park High School. For families seeking a homeschool alternative, our accredited program offers both the structure and recognition needed for a smooth transition into high school.

Innovative Electives for Today’s Learners

Through the K12 Learning Academy, we offer a range of middle school electives designed to provide personalized, flexible learning experiences. The list of courses offered by K12 can be downloaded here. Our middle school curriculum includes:

Core Subjects: Math, science, language arts, history, art, music, and world languages (e.g., Spanish, French). These are standard but often supplemented with interactive, online components.

Electives:

  • Career-Focused Electives: Starting in 6th grade, students can explore career pathways through courses like career exploration, which introduce skills for fields such as business, technology, or healthcare. These are part of K12’s Career Prep program, which is more structured than typical middle school offerings.

  • STEM Education: Specialized STEM courses beyond standard science, such as coding, robotics, or project-based tech labs, designed to foster hands-on problem-solving.  These courses are supplemented by our local, in-person workshops.

  • World Languages: Options like Spanish, French, or German, often with interactive online components, which are not consistently offered in public schools.

  • Art and Music Appreciation: Courses like Art History or Music Appreciation, which emphasize creative exploration and may include digital tools for virtual art creation or music production.

  • Life Skills and Personal Development: Courses like Personal Health, Nutrition & Wellness, or Introductory Finance, which focus on practical skills for adolescence and beyond.

  • Extracurricular Clubs: Virtual clubs (e.g., career clubs, coding clubs) that function as electives, allowing students to explore interests like technology or entrepreneurship in a collaborative online setting.
